Fake Bank Text Scams (Smishing) - Apr 2026
Text message scams, also known as “smishing,” are on the rise and becoming harder to spot. Fraudsters send messages that appear to come from financial institutions, often warning of suspicious activity or a locked account.
These messages may include a link or ask you to reply “Yes” or “No” to verify a transaction. Once you engage, scammers may try to collect personal information or gain access to your accounts.
How this scam works:
- You receive a text that looks like it’s from a credit union or bank
- The message creates urgency, such as a “fraud alert” or account issue
- You’re asked to click a link or respond
- The link leads to a fake website or triggers a follow-up call from a scammer
Red flags to watch for:
- Messages from unfamiliar or slightly altered phone numbers
- Links that don’t match the financial institution’s official website
- Requests for login details, passcodes, or personal information
- Pressure to act immediately
How to protect yourself:
- Do not click links or respond to unexpected texts about your accounts
- Contact NGFCU directly at 800.643.2848
- Never share passwords, PINs, or one-time passcodes
- Enable account alerts and monitor your transactions regularly
If you ever receive a suspicious message, pause before taking action. A quick verification can help protect your accounts and your peace of mind.
